Meta hook rate benchmark: what counts as a good hook rate

There is no official Meta hook rate benchmark, so build your own. This guide gives you the formula, a way to rate each hook against your own account and the limits of the number.

What hook rate is and how to calculate it

Hook rate is the share of impressions that turned into a 3-second video play. It tells you one thing: did the opening stop the scroll.

The formula: 3-second video plays divided by impressions, times 100. In Ads Manager, add the 3-second video plays column and the impressions column, then do the math in a sheet or a custom metric.

Its companion is hold rate. A common definition is ThruPlays divided by 3-second plays. Hold rate tells you whether the people who stopped kept watching. Hook rate is the opening. Hold rate is the body. Neither one is a sales number.

So what is a good hook rate on Meta?

Honest answer: it depends on your account, and anyone quoting one universal figure is guessing. Meta does not publish a hook rate benchmark. The numbers that float around come from individual accounts with their own audiences, products and placements.

A better benchmark is your own median. Pull your last 20 to 30 video ads that got enough impressions, take the median hook rate, and rate every new hook against it.

Here is an example. The numbers are illustrative, not industry data. Say your median is 27%.

Why a hook rate benchmark can mislead you

Even your own benchmark needs guardrails. A hook rate is only comparable when the conditions match.

Placement changes the result. Reels, Stories and Feed autoplay differently and show video at different sizes. If one ad ran mostly in Reels and another mostly in Feed, the gap may be placement, not the hook.

Audience changes it too. A prospecting audience that has never seen you scrolls differently from a retargeting pool that knows your product. Compare cold with cold.

Volume matters. A hook rate on 400 impressions is noise. Set a minimum before you rate anything. As a rule of thumb, wait for at least 1,000 impressions, and more if your rates are tight.

Format shifts the baseline as well. A founder talking to camera, a product demo and a text-on-screen opening do not stop thumbs at the same rate. Keep a separate median per format if you have enough ads.

Hook rating rules to copy

Paste these into your testing sheet and edit the numbers to match your account.

  • Hook rate = 3-second video plays / impressions x 100.
  • Hold rate = ThruPlays / 3-second plays x 100.
  • Minimum before rating: 1,000 impressions (change to suit your volume).
  • Benchmark = median hook rate of your last 20 to 30 video ads, per format if possible.
  • Strong = 5+ points above median. Normal = within 3 points. Weak = 5+ below.
  • Only compare ads from the same audience type and similar placement mix.
  • Test one change at a time: the first 3 seconds, nothing else.
  • Rate the hook first, then judge the ad on ROAS or CPA after 7 days.
  • Log every hook with its angle and format so you can see which kinds win.
  • Recalculate the median monthly. Never move the cutoffs mid-test.

How to build your own hook ratings in 30 minutes

You do not need a tool for this. You need an export and a rule you write down before you look at the data.

Hook ratings work best when they are boring: a few labels, fixed cutoffs, the same every week.

Read hook rate, hold rate and ROAS in order

Hook rate is a diagnostic, not a verdict. A high hook rate with weak results is common, because a loud opening can attract people who never wanted to buy. Read the numbers in sequence and fix the first broken step.

The order that saves time:

Where hook rate fits in a weekly test

The cleanest way to use hook rate is to test hooks on purpose. Keep the body of the ad the same, change only the first 3 seconds, and compare hook rates inside one test. Same audience, same placement, same week. That removes most of the noise described above.

Then let money decide. Hook rate tells you which opening to keep. Spend share and ROAS tell you whether the idea works. Treat a test the way you would any creative test: give it 7 days, compare it with the campaign's own baseline and write down the result.

This is where Hitrate helps. It plans each test as a numbered batch, writes the ad names so every result maps back to the batch, its desire, angle, awareness stage, format and creator, and labels the batch after 7 days. Scaler, Spender, Efficient or Miss, by one written rule. The label is based on spend share and ROAS against the campaign, not on hook rate, so a pretty opening cannot hide a Miss.

Mistakes that wreck hook rate readings

Most bad reads come from process, not math.

Questions

What is a good hook rate on Meta?

It depends on your account, format and audience, and Meta does not publish an official figure. Use the median of your own recent video ads as the baseline, then call a hook strong when it clearly beats that median on similar traffic.

How do you calculate hook rate in Ads Manager?

Divide 3-second video plays by impressions and multiply by 100. Add both columns to your report and calculate the ratio in a spreadsheet or a custom metric.

What is the difference between hook rate and hold rate?

Hook rate measures how many impressions became a 3-second play, so it shows whether the opening stopped the scroll. Hold rate commonly compares ThruPlays with 3-second plays, so it shows whether viewers stayed once they stopped.

Does a high hook rate mean the ad will sell?

No. It means the opening got attention. An ad can hook well and still miss on ROAS if the body, offer or landing page does not follow through. Judge the ad on results against your campaign baseline.

How many impressions do I need before reading hook rate?

Set a minimum and keep to it. A rule of thumb is at least 1,000 impressions per ad, higher if your hook rates are close together. Below that, the difference between two ads is mostly noise.

How do I improve a weak hook rate?

Change only the first 3 seconds: the opening frame, the first spoken line, on-screen text or the motion. Make 3 to 5 variants with the same body and compare their hook rates in one test.

Does Hitrate calculate hook rate?

Hitrate labels each test batch after 7 days using spend share and ROAS against its campaign, or a target CPA. It names your ads so results map back to desire, angle, awareness stage, format and creator. Hook rate stays a diagnostic you read alongside the verdict.
